Cartoon calendar puts Ojai on notice
By Kelly Feser Eells

Whether "getting better organized" is at the top of your New Year's resolution list or you just wish staying organized were more fun, you're in luck. Local artist and Ojai Valley News cartoonist Colleen McDougal has just released a pocket sized, week-at-glance calendar featuring 52 of her best-loved cartoons.

The idea "was suggested to me by (OVN production manager) Ed Brooks," McDougal says. "He said, 'Gary Larson has a calendar, why not you?'"

Brooks, she chuckles, further "encouraged" the collection by pointing out that, "You're the only one who gets to see the cartoons (after they're published in the newspaper). And if it's something people really love(d), well, it might go on their refrigerator, but people line their bird cages with them, too.'"

McDougal reviewed four years' worth of archives in search of just the right illustration for each of the weeks in 2004. "I tried to match events, like Mother's Day" to favorite cartoons whenever possible.

Fun and functional - with a "Note to self" section on every other page - the calendar offers a birds'-eye view of local goings-on and recent history.

Haven't gotten around to writing your holiday newsletter? You could send one of these calendars to out-of-town relatives, instead. It'll keep them up-to-date, so to speak, on the antics of Ojai residents.
Priced at $10 dollars each, the Week-at-a-Glance 2004 Calendar is available at: Local Hero Bookstore; Table of Contents; Stir Crazy; Java 'n Joe; Ojai Business Center, and Ojai Card and Gifts.
