Lady Rangers score
first win of season
By Jesse Phelps
The Lady Rangers finally had
something to cheer about Wednesday night, as they put away the
fourth-ranked CIF-SS Division IV team, 2-1.
Nordhoff, currently ranked No. 3 in the CIF-SS Division V polls,
is following in the footsteps of the Ranger football team. Both
squads ranked No. 3 for much of the season, falling behind the
No. 1-ranked Oaks Christian and No. 2-ranked Oak Park.
Against the Spartans, the Lady Rangers started out with two quick
goals by Nordhoff in the first five minutes. Lindsey Owen slotted
the ball past the keeper off an assist from Amie Cresto. Four
minutes later, Cresto found the back of the net off a direct
kick from Monica Kenton and an assist from Lauren Lansing.
"Beca Morrison closed out Rio Mesa on several drives as
sweeper," said NHS coach Pete Christl.
But the moment Nordhoff relaxed, Rio Mesa contered, netting a
goal in the last five minutes of the first half.
"The second half was a battle with both sides creating opportunities,"
said Christl.
However, all scoring remained in the first half, and the final
score of the night found Nordhoff on top, 2-1.
Nordhoff's first victory boosted their record to 1-3-1.
The girls will head into the second half of the Buena tournament
tomorrow vs. Grant at 8 a.m.
"(We had) outstanding play from Lindsey Owen and Ana Levin
on the wings," enthused Christl. "Sarah Stoltz and
Amie Cresto consistently found the open runner and created opportunities
from midfield."
