On this day, as the Ojai Valley News celebrates its 130th birthday, our flag flies under new ownership. This essential community resource has once again been passed along to a new steward — this time from Bob Daddi, of Downhome Publishing LLC, to Ojai Media LLC.
Judge to wade into water case without independent expert

A major water lawsuit is moving forward without a court-appointed independent water expert.
On Oct. 18, the judge in the Ventura River Watershed Adjudication case denied without prejudice a motion by Meiners Oaks residents Claude R. Baggerly and Patricia E. Baggerly to appoint a neutral hydrogeologist.

Unauthorized NHS visitor cleared

Nordhoff High School officials updated their report of an unauthorized vehicle in the student parking lot at lunchtime Oct. 6.
According to a message from the principal, it was determined that a high school student in another district had recently bought a new car and wanted to show it off to other high school students.

• Obstructing or intimidating business operations or customers was reported in the 300 block of East Ojai Avenue Oct. 16.
• Vandalism was reported in the 400 block of East Ojai Avenue Oct. 18.
Arrests
• A 66-year-old man was cited at El Paseo Road and Ojai Avenue Oct. 13 for having dogs off-leash.
Drought emergency declaration expands to include Ventura County

According to a report released Oct. 21, 46% of California, including most of Ventura County, is experiencing exceptional drought.

The Ventura County Board of Supervisors hosted a public hearing Oct. 19 on the draft county supervisorial redistricting maps. They include four design options that were created by the Redistricting Partners group assisting the county in the redistricting process.

For over a century, the Ojai Valley News has chronicled the story of our town

From its first edition, published on Oct. 27, 1891, the newspaper has been the historical record of the valley. “For a local historian it’s invaluable, because it’s the record of the life of the community,” said Ojai historian and author Craig Walker.
In the inaugural issue of The Ojai, founder Leverett Mesick expressed high hopes for the valley’s future.
A printer by trade, Mesick suffered from rheumatism and came to Ojai for its warm, dry climate.

Climate change is hitting us hard, with the driest year in a century, the hottest summer ever recorded, and forest fires again raging out of control up and down the state. Scientists expect more extreme conditions to come, with longer and drier drought periods and more intense storms in wet periods.

There are new developments in the works for downtown Ojai that will affect some of Ojai’s most historic and cherished buildings: the Ojai Playhouse Theater, the Oaks Hotel, and the Ojai Unified School District district offices. They are all part of Ojai’s historic downtown.
