Over the past couple weeks, I have received several inquiries about California's new food-waste recycling law that took effect Jan. 1. The law requires residents and businesses to recycle their food waste and other organics.

The Omicron variant has caused case numbers and hospitalizations to be at their highest levels since the start of the pandemic. Fortunately, the severity of the illness in fully vaccinated individuals does appear to be less than at this time last year, when ICU admissions and deaths were higher. Despite this, becoming infected can have a significant impact on your life and the lives of those you spend time with.
Here are recommendations to take care of yourself and others during this challenging time:

A free opening reception for the “Ojai Visions” exhibition, featuring Ojai Studio Artists, will be held Jan. 22, from 2 to 4 p.m., at the Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts in Upper Ojai. (This is a new time from the time that was first reported.)

A 3.1 magnitude earthquake in the area of Meiners Oaks at 4:02 p.m. Jan. 16 was felt and heard in the Ojai area. It was reported by the U.S. Geological Survey to be 9.3 kilometers deep.

La Conchita Pier. Scattered light rain and calm wind, with surf 2 to 4 feet, 54 degrees on the morning of Saturday, Jan. 15.
At 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, the National Weather Service stated on its website that "The tsunami advisory remains in effect for the coastal areas of California, Oregon, Washington and British Columbia, from the California/Mexico border to North Vancouver Island British Columbia.
"If you are located in this coastal area, move off the beach and out of harbors and marinas. ... Tsunamis are a series of waves dangerous many hours after initial arrival time. The first wave may not be the largest."

This chart outlines the current number of hospitalizations related to COVID-19, which as of Jan. 14, was listed at 311 individuals, a new peak from the previous 14-day period.
Due to increasing COVID-19 cases and the resulting strain on local health care systems, Ventura County Public Health is encouraging residents to avoid visiting the emergency room unless emergency medical care is needed.

A cat showed a mountain lion who’s king of the jungle Jan. 4 in Meiners Oaks.
At approximately 2 a.m., home-security cameras at the Ellison residence in the 800 block of Moreno Drive captured the cougar as it sprang from beneath a Jeep parked in the driveway and chased a neighbor’s cat up a tree.

COVID-19 cases continue to rise throughout Ventura County and the Ojai Valley, resulting in long lines at testing centers including COVID Clinic at Ojai’s Sarzotti Park (350 Park Road).
Free PCR tests are available at Sarzotti Park on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
