Alternative economy is evasive: Several notable non-tourist businesses have packed up and left

This is part one of a four-part series looking at tourism and its impacts on the community. In the next three series we will look at the perceptions and realities surrounding those impacts and the community’s ability to change.

Some locals are voicing discomfort with Ojai’s status as a tourist hot spot.
“We’re dependent (on tourism), but that doesn’t mean we have to keep going in that direction. We have to diversify our economy,” said Ojai City Councilwoman Suza Francina.
Accomplishing that task, however, may prove difficult according to two local businessmen.
Tom Krause founded BST (Behavioral Science Technology, Inc) in 1979 and operated an Ojai branch of the business until it was sold in 2012.
At the business’s height, Krause employed approximately 60 people in his Ojai office.
