Brown vetoes telecommunications bill

In a big victory for cities and counties, and a major defeat for wireless companies, Gov. Jerry Brown has vetoed SB 649, the wireless telecommunications bill.
The city of Ojai joined more than 300 cities statewide in sending letters to Brown opposing the contentious bill, that would have made it easier to install 5G microwave radiation antennas by restricting the fees and permitting requirements that local governments could put on them.
“It forces cities to lease out their public property for wireless equipment, and eliminates the city’s ability to charge a fair, market-rate lease,” said James Vega, assistant to Ojai City Manager Steve McClary.
