Council supports applying for tiny home village grant

Perry Van Houten, Ojai Valley News reporter
The city of Ojai has sent a letter of support on behalf of a group hoping to win a federal grant to build a demonstration tiny home “village.”
The matter was the sole topic of discussion during a special meeting of the Ojai City Council Feb. 22.
Following a request from Councilmembers Suza Francina and William Weirick, the Council considered an application for a grant to Fannie Mae for monies from its Sustainable Communities Innovation Challenge.
The applicants are the nonprofit Ojai Valley Green Coalition (OVGC) and the boutique design firm Sol Haus Design.
The issue before the Council was whether the city would authorize a letter of support for the Challenge, for a demonstration workforce affordable tiny home community in Ojai.
“The intent of the application is to boost the overall housing supply for anyone who needs this type of housing, including Ojai service workers who currently commute outside of the valley to work in Ojai,” Francina stated in an email to the Ojai Valley News.
“The city is not making any legal commitment with respect to land or funds or staff time,” Weirick explained.
