CHP and sheriff's deputies investigate an officer-involved shooting in the area of Portal Street and Ventura Avenue on July 5, at 8:36 a.m.
The man shot and killed by a California Highway Patrol
officer in Oak View at about 6:08 a.m. July 5 is said to be a 20-year-old man, described as a transient, according to Capt. Eric Hatlee of the Ventura County Sheriff's Department. His name has not been released, pending notification of family.
The CHP officer who shot the man was taken to a hospital after an altercation that occurred on East Portal Street off of Ventura Avenue. His injuries were non-life-threatening and he was released from the hospital July 5, Hatlee said.
A man in a red shirt was reported to CHP to be walking in and out of traffic at approximately 6 a.m., Hatlee said. During the officer's investigation in the area of Portal Street, "the suspect attacked the officer, which was witnessed by an uninvolved citizen," according to a press release from the Ventura County Sheriff's Office. "The physical altercation resulted in the officer firing one round and hitting the suspect in the chest. The CHP officer and a Ventura County sheriff's deputy, who arrived after the shooting, performed emergency medical care on the suspect until medical personnel arrived. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene."
A resident of East Portal Street reported hearing a shot at about 6 a.m.
According to the press release: "The Ventura County Sheriff's Office will conduct the shooting investigation as the shooting occurred within our jurisdiction. The California Highway Patrol will conduct an administrative investigation to determine whether the use of force was consistent with their policy. The suspect's body will be taken to the Ventura County Medical Examiner's Office where an autopsy will be performed."
Anyone with information related to the shooting is asked to call Det. Sgt. Ron Chips at 805-384-4737.
The CHP issued the following statement with the Sheriff's Office press release: "Our officers routinely place themselves directly in harm’s way to protect our communities, and the use of force is always a last resort. In keeping with our commitment to public accountability, the CHP is fully cooperating with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department and the District Attorney’s Office and will provide investigators all the information to ensure a full, thorough and transparent investigation. While the investigation is underway, the officer involved is on paid administrative leave pursuant to CHP policy. Any further questions regarding the incident should be referred to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office."
