OUSD update: suspicious activity at Matilija under investigation

2 28 OUSD
Ojai Unified School District Superintendent Tiffany Morse sent out the following message at about 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 4,  via email and its Parent Square online communication site:
Dear OUSD Families,
Today a Matilija student reported that while waiting at a bus stop, a black Honda pulled over and asked our student to get in. At that time, the bus arrived and the driver left the area.
The student was able to remember a few digits of the license plate and immediately reported the incident to the school. The Ojai Police Department responded to the incident and is conducting an investigation. They will also be operating extra patrols in the area. This is a great example of a student following our "See Something, Say Something" protocol.
In light of this event, please help us ensure your children remain safe by sharing the following information with them about what to do in the case of a stranger approaching them:
  • Be aware of your surroundings. Remember, earbuds make it harder to hear what is happening around you.
  • Stay more than an arm’s reach from strangers.  If you are approached by a stranger, seek help immediately.
  • Trust your instincts, if you feel you are being followed or something is not right, seek help immediately.
  • Use the buddy system and walk with a friend or group.
  • Review contact telephone numbers and home safety practices so you know how to call someone if you feel unsafe.
  • Report any suspicious activity to your school or the police department.
School staff at every site is available to speak with students who may be worried about this or any incident.
