Ojai city officials give update on COVID-19 impacts on March 13 at 6:15 p.m.

3 13 OJAIOjai residents,

Today (Friday, Marc 13), the City of Ojai issued a declaration of a local emergency in response to COVID 19 (coronavirus). This should not cause undue concern. It is necessary for the city to take this step in order to help contain the spread of the coronavirus, through social distancing, allows the City to react quickly if needed, and makes the City eligible for emergency funding from the State and Federal government.

Please continue to use social distancing measures and proper hand-washing, at work and at home.
Measures Implemented: City staff are working to make restrooms available and clean 24 hours a day for vulnerable populations. The city has also ordered hand sanitizers and hand wash stations and will make those available as soon as possible (some items delayed due to backorder). City staff has been in close contact with the County, other Ventura County Cities, and key community partners to coordinate resources and identify needs.
City Services: City Hall and Offices will remain open during regular business hours. To help prevent spread, we encourage any person seeking city services to use email, online, or telephone methods to communicate their need for city services. As part of this, the city will accept submissions of any applications or petitions by mail or email, and appropriate staff will follow up to confirm completeness, make arrangements for payment of required fees, and to confirm next steps and requirements as appropriate.
Trolley Services continue to operate.
Facilities: In line with the California Governor’s recommendations, and to prevent potential spread, the city will be closing the Boyd (Recreation) Center and the Libbey Bowl for the time being, to discourage gatherings of over 250 people. The city is also suspending recreation programming.
Events: All non-essential city-sponsored events are canceled or postponed.
City Meetings: Non-critical city meetings are canceled through March 31. City Council meetings will continue, with limited seating to ensure social distancing, and with remote viewing and email comments available.
Residents are encouraged to submit their comments via email before 3 p.m. to the deputy city clerk at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and they will be provided to the Council.
Other board and commission meetings are suspended through March 31.
Police and Emergency Services: Police services continue uninterrupted. Police Officers are prepared to respond as needed.
Note that there is currently no vaccine to prevent COVID-19, and the best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory viruses, such as Novel Coronavirus:
•         Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
•         Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.
•         Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
•         Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
•         Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
•         Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces
