Ojai Valley News Election Endorsement on OPINION page: Yes on Measure G Ojai cannabis tax

Measure G — the Ojai cannabis tax — should stand for “Good for Ojai.”
It is an easy yes for a common-sense measure with needed benefits for the city of Ojai.
Measure G allows the city of Ojai to tax cannabis businesses in Ojai 3%, for now, with the caveat that it can increase the tax on cannabis business up to 10% of gross receipts in the future, “until the voters decide otherwise.”
The measure requires 50% of the voters plus one to pass.
Measure G is estimated to add potentially $465,000 to $1,555,000 to the city’s general fund.
That additional revenue, which can be used for general city services, will go a long way to shore up the city’s $1.8 million shortfall due to the pandemic, and can be spent on worthwhile initiatives in better times.
There are three cannabis dispensaries in Ojai, which have been well received and, from all accounts, are doing well.
Since Proposition 64 passed in 2016 by 56% of the vote, scores of California cities, including Port Hueneme, have levied cannabis taxes for the benefit of their residents.
We encourage voters to vote Yes on Measure G.
