An Ojai man arrested on suspicion of arson for a small brush fire near Meiners Oaks June 18 remains in custody with a court date set for Tuesday.
Sheriff’s deputies arrested 28-year-old Jorge Flores just hours after the Luna Fire broke out shortly after 6 p.m. off Highway 33, north of La Luna Avenue.
The fire burned approximately 5 acres on a ranch on the east side of the highway and was quickly contained by firefighters with the Ventura County Fire Department and Los Padres National Forest.
No structures were threatened, according to VCFD.
The California Highway Patrol shut down Highway 33 north of Fairview Road for approximately three hours while crews worked to extinguish the fire that was burning uphill toward a lemon orchard on Quail Run Ranch.
Firefighters reported the fire fully controlled at 8:50 p.m.
Deputies received assistance identifying and locating Flores from witnesses at the scene, according to Capt. Eric Buschow with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office.
“The reporting party had seen a suspicious person in the area and saw him walking away from where a brush fire had just started,” Buschow said.
Deputies found Flores nearby and based on their investigation arrested him on suspicion of felony arson and for being under the influence of a controlled substance, Buschow said.
Flores was booked into the Ventura County Jail with his bail set at $45,000 and is due to appear in court June 22 at 1:30 p.m., according to court records.
The Luna Fire was the second brush fire in a week to break out in the Ojai Valley.
On June 14, a blaze broke out north of Lake Casitas and burned 188 acres. Cause of the fire remains under investigation.
