On Aug. 9, 1944, the U.S. Forest Service authorized Smokey Bear to be the symbol of fire prevention. In 1950, the living symbol of Smokey, a 5-pound, 3-month-old black bear cub was rescued by crews battling a large wildfire in New Mexico and was named Smokey. Pictured here with Smokey in 2019 is Ojai Valley News senior reporter Perry Van Houten, at the Wheeler Gorge Visitor Center open house.
