Bring your appetite and your checkbook to a spaghetti dinner Aug. 28 hosted by the American Legion Auxiliary and Veterans of

Foreign Wars Post 11461.

The dinner, a fundraiser to help pay for this year’s Veterans Day activities in Ojai, runs from 4 to 8 p.m. at the American Legion Hall, 843 E. Ojai Ave.

For $10 a ticket, you get a spaghetti dinner “with all the trimmings,” said volunteer Patti Bagley, who’s organizing the dinner along with chef for the evening Nancy Hill.

“She’s an incredible cook, so it’s going to be a great dinner,” Bagley told the Ojai Valley News.

Money raised will help fund a Veterans Day observance Nov. 11 that includes a free breakfast for veterans at the American Legion Hall and a concert at Libbey Bowl.

While use of the Bowl was donated by the city of Ojai, organizers still need to cover the costs of entertainment, music and a sound system, plus providing lunch to band members.

Also on display at Libbey Park Nov. 11 will be the Wall of Remembrance, which tells the stories of hundreds of Ventura County servicemen and women, most of them from the Ojai Valley.

The spaghetti dinner comes with salad, garlic bread and dessert, and there’s a vegetarian option and an Alfredo sauce option, according to Bagley, who will be running the silent auction.

Auction items include gift baskets donated by local businesses, Bagley said.

Diners can relax outdoors on the patio behind the American Legion Hall, or they can eat inside while observing mask and distancing requirements.

Volunteers will also be picking up and delivering meals to local families, Bagley added. “It’s just going to be an all-around wonderful thing for the community,” she said.

Due to the pandemic, this year’s Memorial Day event in May was postponed and combined with the Veterans Day observance.

The Aug. 28 event will be the first dinner served at the American Legion Hall since COVID-19 struck. Normally, the American Legion holds dinners on the first Friday of each month and the Auxiliary on the third Friday.

If you’re not able to attend the event, there are other ways to support Veterans Day activities in Ojai, Bagley said. “People have been sending in checks, as well,” she said, “to help put on this big show and serve free breakfast to the veterans on Nov. 11.”

Donations are tax-deductible. Checks can be made out to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, nonprofit #770565639 and mailed to 1497 Loma Drive, Ojai CA 93023-3834.
