Nordhoff back-to-school night tonight, Aug. 31, announces opportunities for students

Nordhoff High School is hosting its back-to-school night tonight, Aug. 31, virtually through Zoom.

The event will begin with 0 Period classes at 5:45 p.m., followed by a short break before a welcome to kick off the event at 6 p.m. Families can check their messages on the OUSD communication platform, ParentSquare, to see the Zoom links for each teacher.

The event will last until Period 7 breaks at 8:05 p.m.

COVID-19 is expected to be addressed throughout the night and testing for students is available on Tuesdays from 3 to 3:45 p.m. in the Cafeteria.

Students of Nordhoff High School were given several new announcements on Tuesday, Aug. 31 as well:

• Schedule changes will only be allowed until Sept. 1.

• The SAT registration deadline is Friday, Sept. 3, for the Oct. 2 test.

• ACT registration is by Friday, Sept. 17, for the test scheduled on Oct. 23.

• Seniors are encouraged to attend an Essay Writing Workshop that will take place via Zoom on Sept. 7 starting at 6:30 p.m. The link to attend the workshop can be found here: https://ojaiusd.zoom.us/j/3128226889.

• Students are encouraged to attend Club Day on campus Thursday, Sept. 2, to discover additional ways to stay involved on campus.

• The College and Career Center will be open and accessible via Zoom during back-to-school night.

• A limited amount of book lockers are being offered to 10th-grade students. Those interested are encouraged to see Amy in the office during their free periods or lunch breaks. 

• The Leadership through International Volunteer Expeditions, or L.I.V.E. program, is accepting new applications which should be completed and submitted by Sept. 3.

• The Nordhoff High School Chamber Choir will be on campus Wednesday, Sept. 1, and Friday, Sept. 3, outside the music building for anyone interested in learning more about the program.

• Nordhoff is also offering students the opportunity to take a college course to earn future credits. In addition to 10 high school elective credits, the American Ethnic Studies V20 class is also transferrible to UCs, CSUs, and Ventura College. The class will take place during the Fall 2021 term from Sept. 13 to Dec. 15 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. The course will provide an interdisciplanary survey of the Mexican American / Chicano heritage with an emphasis on the contemporary experience in the United States, discussing economic, political, social, and intellectual elements. 

• There will be no school Monday, Sept. 6, for Labor Day.
