OUSD increases rate for substitute teachers

Grant Phillips, Ojai Valley News reporter

At the Oct. 13 Ojai Unified School District’s meeting Oct. 13, the board voted unanimously (4-0 with Trustee Jane Weil absent) to approve higher compensation for substitute teachers throughout the district, offering a wide range of added benefits.

The decision stemmed from a substitute teaching and overall staff shortage that has affected OUSD throughout the school year.

The decision increased the daily rate for substitutes from $125 to $140 and added a quick-start bonus of $500 after completing five assignments with a positive evaluation. An additional retention bonus or stipend of $50 per month was also included for those who work at least one day per week for the entirety of the month.

Qualifications for becoming a substitute teacher in California include:

1. A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited undergraduate institution

2. A Negative TB test administered within 60 days of hire

3. A completed Live Scan test and background check

4. Passing score on the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) or equivalent

5. A 30-day permit from the Ventura County Office of Education

6. Availability for assignments at least once a week, particularly on Mondays and Fridays.

Individuals are allowed to opt out of the CBEST requirement if they:

— achieved a score of at lest 500 on the SAT English exam and a score of 550 on the SAT math exam

— achieved a score of 3 or higher on the College Board AP English exam and a score of 3 or higher on the AP Calculus or the AP statistics exam

— achieved a score of at least 22 on the ACT English exam and a score of at least 23 on the ACT mathematics

— passed a basic skills examination from another state

The CBEST consists of three separate sections and costs $102. It can be taken both online and in person. A list of sites with dates and locations for the exam can be found here:
