11-16-21, Harriet Grout Kennedy, 99

Harriet Grout Kennedy passed away peacefully on 11-16-21, at Ojai Valley Hospital Continuing Care, at the age of 99.

She was born to James Grout and Edna Leslie Grout in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Her mother was born in Ojai, in 1894, on the family ranch which is currently the location of the Ojai Olive Oil Company.

Edna Leslie attended Nordhoff High School in the first graduating class of 1912. Harriet followed this trend by graduating from Nordhoff in 1941.

Harriet’s grandfather, James Leslie, arrived in Ojai in 1888, and was a prolific contractor who built most of the homes in East Ojai from the 1890s until the 1930s. A few of his remaining buildings include the Women’s Center, Boyd Club, and family-owned homes in downtown Ojai.

James Grout, Harriet’s father, brought the family from Massachusetts in 1929 to Ojai. The Grouts descended from the pilgrim landing in Plymouth in 1620.

Harriet was a member of the Mayflower Society, the Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.), and the National Society Magna Charta Dames and Barons.

Harriet was a superb tennis player. She was number one at Nordhoff High and reached the quarterfinals of the renowned Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament in 1938.

She was also a member of the Ojai Racquet Club. She cherished Ojai Valley. She proudly worked on the Nordhoff High School newspaper staff and she served on the Board of Directors of the Ojai Valley Museum.

Harriet is preceded in death by John Kennedy, her husband of 56 years. She is survived by her son Larry Kennedy and his wife Joanne, her daughter Lynda Kennedy Killingsworth and her husband Chuck, and four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

The family thanks Lynda Killingsworth for daily support and care for Harriet during her last years of a wonderful life filled with love.
