The “Christmas Comet” is brightening the sky this holiday season. On Dec. 22, photographer Carla Cahill captured Comet C/2021 A1, also known as Comet Leonard, above the Santa Ynez Mountains, looking southwest from Rice Road in Meiners Oaks.

According to experts, the comet will get dimmer and dimmer toward the end of December and won’t pass Earth again for another 80,000 years. “True to what I have read, I definitely could not see it with the naked eye,” said Cahill. “It was even difficult to see through my 600mm zoom, but I looked for something fuzzy and, just below Venus, I found it.”
