10-22-21, Rosemary (Rome) Roberts Earle

Rome was born near Hull, in Yorkshire, England, to parents Dorothea and Kenneth Pyman Bell, whose family owned the Pyman Shipping Company.

As a young woman, Rome studied at the Laban School of Modern Dance in Manchester, as well as touring Europe and Scandinavia with the Laban Dance Group.

Back problems later led her to the Alexander Technique. She studied with F.M. Alexander in his Teacher Training School in England, from 1949-1951, before immigrating to the U.S.

Rome came to Ojai in 1952 to help her sister Heather Young, Ojai potter and longtime resident, who was pregnant with her first child.

She loved Ojai and stayed living in the Valley, marrying and raising four children.

Rome taught preschool at the Monica Ross School for some years in the early 1970s.

In 1974, she returned to England to receive her certification in the Alexander Technique. Through the years, Rome studied with several master teachers both in England and in the U.S. She taught privately in Ojai, Santa Barbara, and Santa Monica.

When her children had all left home, she moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1983, to become the senior teacher at the Alexander Teacher Training Institute in San Francisco where she worked for twenty years. In 1984, she met and married Arthur Earle, and they remained devoted to each other for the rest of her life.

After twenty years teaching in San Francisco, she and Art moved to the San Diego area to be close to their daughter and her growing family. In San Diego, Rome continued teaching the Alexander Technique privately.

Rome was respected and loved in the Alexander world. She was a valued teacher, trainer, and colleague in the U.S. and in England.

Family was very important to Rome. She was a loving and supportive wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, and great-grandmother, always spending time with her family and being there when they needed support.

She was a loved and remarkable person and will be greatly missed. Rome is survived by her husband, Arthur Earle, sons Mark Roberts and Sean Roberts, daughters Jennifer Eckersley and Melanie Roberts Dawson, fourteen grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Rome’s life will take place January 14, 2022, 1:00-3:00 p.m., at the Redeemer Presbyterian Church, 1831 S. El Camino Real, Encinitas, CA. Outdoor seating will be available.
