12-23-21, Alan Rains

Alan Rains died peacefully at home on December 23, 2021.

As the owner of Rains Department Store, he operated one of California’s oldest family-owned-and-operated businesses. As a recent recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the City of Ojai, for his many contributions to the community, Alan was proud to have contributed to the success and local control of the Ojai Valley Community Hospital, for spearheading the building of the Nordhoff football stadium, for having chaired the Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament and for serving as Treasurer of the City of Ojai.

Alan was a jazz aficionado, having been a music major at College of the Pacific (later renamed the University of the Pacific), where he started the “Rains Ratty Ragtimers.”

He and his family enjoyed many wonderful vacations water skiing, camping, and backpacking. He enjoyed snow skiing and traveling the world with his wife. Alan will also be remembered for his many quiet, personal acts of kindness.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Jan, four children: Jeff, Allan, Jami, and Kristin, and six grandchildren: Duncan, Tait, Sharmaine, Michael, Ashton, and Laurel, and his great-granddaughter Genevieve, who were blessed by his kindness and generosity.

He will be remembered in a celebration of his life at the Ojai Presbyterian Church sometime in 2022.
