UPDATE: 3.1 magnitude quake 2 miles from Meiners Oaks at 4:02 p.m. Jan. 16

Star on map shows where a magnitude 3.1 earthquake struck Jan. 16 at 4:02 p.m., at a depth of 9.3 kilometers, in the Meiners Oaks area, 3.1 miles west, southwest of Ojai.


 A 3.1 magnitude earthquake in the area of Meiners Oaks at 4:02 p.m. Jan. 16 was felt and heard in the Ojai area. It was reported by the U.S. Geological Survey to be 9.3 kilometers deep.

“It felt like someone kicked the house once real hard,” said Ally Mills who lives near Nordhoff High School.

A Meiners Oaks resident said her daughter asked if she had closed the window because she heard a “thud.”

An Ojai resident on Crestview Drive said it sounded like a crack. 

As of 5:47 p.m. Jan. 16, 156 people told the USGS online that they had felt the quake, with most reporting it was a "light" or "weak" shaker.

This quake near Meiners Oaks comes exactly one year to the day that a 1.5 magnitude quake struck near Meiners Oaks — 2 kilometers from Meiners Oaks and 6 kilometers west of Ojai — at 9:51 p.m. on Jan. 16, 2021.

There was also a 1.8 magnitude quake in the same Meiners Oaks vicinity — 2 kilometers from Meiners Oaks — on July 20, 2020 at 12:50 a.m., and a 1.5 magnitude quake 2 kilometers from Meiners Oaks on Dec. 6 at 11:20 a.m.

And, of course, the 6.7 magnitude Northridge Earthquake struck on Jan. 17, 1994.

Editor's note: Initial reports from the USGS were that the quake was a 3.4 magnitude, but the website later stated that it was a 3.1 magnitude quake.
