A memorial service is set for Wednesday, Feb. 2 at 2 p.m. for U.S. Forest Service firefighter and recreational ranger Mike Porter, who passed away from a heart attack Jan. 22.

He was 38.

The memorial will be held at Reality Ventura, 1954 Goodyear Ave. in Ventura.

Services will be streamed live at https://youtu.be/plvQz4T8Kq4.

Porter started his career on Los Padres National Forest in 2007 as a temporary firefighter, and for the last four-and-a-half years served as the face and voice of the Ojai Ranger District, working at the front desk as the District’s visitor services information assistant.

A native of Ventura, Porter’s first job as a seasonal firefighter was in the summer of 2007 with the Santa Barbara Ranger District.

The following season, he worked as a temp hire on ORD Engine 51, before returning to Santa Barbara and spending the summer of 2009 on Engine 43.

In 2010, Porter was back in Ojai, where he worked at the Wheeler Gorge Station on Engine 55, and was deployed on multiple wildfires for parts of eight fire seasons.

According to the USFS, Porter’s pleasant disposition and vast knowledge of the forest made him the ideal candidate for the vacant front desk job at ORD.

“Porter was our District expert and was always so cheerful and happy to help with fact-finding,” said Ojai District Ranger Karina Medina. “His memory recall was incredible. He knew the ORD — and most of Los Padres — like the back of his hand, and he took so much pride in that.”

Porter is survived by his wife, Heather, and their two daughters, Adeline and Hazel.
