“Four Part Burst” by Trisha van Cleef

By Kathleen Kaiser

The most dramatic pictures of the universe taken by the orbiting Hubble telescope peer into the dark depths, millions of years back in time to record events that happened close to the birth of the cosmos.

The images are colorful beyond imagination and extremely violent due to the origins of their explosive glory. Like most viewers of the Hubble images, artist Trisha van Cleef was profoundly moved by what she saw – the birth and death of stars and galaxies, vast nebulae floating in the far reaches of space gracefully rotating so far back in time.

Her series, “Starscapes,” draws from this inspiration and is now part of the February show at the Ojai Art Center Gallery. The second half of the “Paul Whitehead/Trisha van Cleef: A One Man – One Woman Artist” show runs through March 2. A closing artist reception will take place Saturday, Feb. 26 at Ojai Art Center, 113 S Montgomery St., from 7 to 9 p.m. The short film “Washed Away” by Paul Whitehead and another short film, “Gurudev,” in which Whitehead starred, will be shown. Plus, the footage shot when he did his TED talk (“Creativity: What it IS and is Not”) last month will air. The public is welcomed.

Ojai Art Center Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and weekends noon to 4 p.m.
