U.S. Geological Survey map of an earthquake swarm in the Upper Ojai area in February, including a 4.0 magnitude temblor on Saturday, Feb. 26, at 5:44 p.m., and a 2.1 magnitude quake on Friday, Feb. 25, at 7:38 p.m. in the area of Sisar Road.

On Saturday, Feb. 26, at 8:44 p.m., a magnitude 3.1 quake struck 6.2 miles NW of Santa Paula at 11 miles deep. A bigger 4.0 magnitude earthquake struck exactly three hours earlier 5.59 miles northwest of Santa Paula at a depth of 16.1 miles.

Seismologist Lucy Jones wrote on Twitter at 6:08 p.m. that the Feb. 26 and Feb. 10 quakes — magnitude 4.0 and 3.9 respectively, are both "very deep for Southern California." The Feb. 26 4.0 magnitude quake was 16.1 miles deep. The Feb. 10 quake was 9.4 miles deep.

There have been several earthquakes of varying magnitudes in this area. There were several reports on Feb. 10 when a 3.9 magnitude quake struck in the Upper Ojai area. To view a U.S. Geological Survey map of various area quakes, visit https://on.doi.gov/3tgATws.

The Ojai Valley News reported 21 earthquakes in the areas between Santa Paula and Ojai from Feb. 10 to 16, with the largest magnitude in that time period a 3.9 magnitude quake on Feb. 10. To read that article, visit https://bit.ly/3tbWeHw.

In an 2019 online article, the USGS defined earthquake swarms this way: "There is no precise definition of when a mainshock-aftershock sequence becomes a swarm. In reality, the distinction is not sharp. Earthquake sequences follow a whole range of behaviors from 'very mainshock-aftershock' to "very unlike mainshock-aftershock.' The 'swarm' designation is typically applied when we observe relatively many earthquakes within a relatively small area, which just don't fit the pattern of a mainshock-aftershock sequence."
