2-20-22, Willoughby Conant Johnson, 85

Willoughby Conant Johnson, age 85, passed peacefully on February 20, 2022. His partner of 34 years, Victoria Matthews, and beloved daughters,

Willow and Tamarind, granddaughter Lorca, Diana Rossetti, and Steve Midgley and his partner, Arielle McKee, were also with him.

Willoughby was born in Missouri, but spent his early years in Texas, while his father served in WWll in the Philippines.

Will was president of his high school class, and went on to the University of Missouri, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude.

He served 3 years in the Navy before heading to the University of Michigan Law School, where again, he excelled in Law Review.

Next, he was practicing law in San Francisco for several years before making his way to Ojai, where he practiced law for over 20 years.

He lived in Matilija Canyon for most of his Ojai days, and was a sailor at heart. He took great joy in being out on Lake Casitas with wind in the sails.

He was very active in the Ojai Museum, and ran a free clinic as a part of his law practice.

He loved traveling, cooking, the opera, and entertaining friends, who knew him as a man of “wit and wisdom”.

In later years he enjoyed walks at the ocean. Willoughby is also survived by Tamarind’s husband, Stephen Wright of France; his brother, Ben Johnson and wife Paula of Alameda;

sister Annie and her partner, Tom Tate of Maryland; as well as stepsisters, Susan Early and Pam Nelson, and her husband Ron, of Missouri.

He loved all in his extended family of nieces and nephews, who live all over the United States.

His beloved sister, Ellen Bonnette, preceded him in death.

A celebration of Will’s life will be held in the spring or early summer.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the garden at the Montessori School of Ojai.
