Humane Society Addresses Chihuahua Overpopulation

Shelters and rescue groups throughout Ventura County have seen a significant increase in the number of Chihuahuas and Chihuahua mixes in the past few years. These breeds now make up about a third of the dog population living in Ventura County shelters. The Humane Society of Ventura County in Ojai reports approximately 36 percent of the dogs sheltered by them are Chihuahuas or mixed breed Chihuahuas. Although most make good pets, there are too many more of them and too few available homes, say shelter officials.
