Rick Monzon began drawing suburban homes when he was 8. “My folks were looking for new housing tracts in the LA area,” says the former commercial artist who describes himself as a realist artist.
“They would go to model homes and get brochures that had idyllic surroundings. I started doing my own versions of them. I went on to hot rods, but I returned to it as a theme years later.” His vibrant oil paintings of houses are blurred, a distortion inspired by ill fitting contact lenses. “This blurring is interesting,” I thought. Monzon’s recent work will be on display at his studio during the annual Ojai Studio Artists Tour Oct. 12 to 14. More than 60 artists across the valley will open their studios each day of the holiday weekend from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This year, the Ojai Valley Museum is the hub of tour activities, including the current “Origins” exhibit, the Oct. 11 night “Artists Preview” and an Oct. 12 evening reception, which is a fundraiser for the OSA Scholarship Fund. Tour tickets are on sale now at the Ojai Valley Museum, Attitude Adjustment and Human Arts Gallery. Visit for more information and to order online tickets.
