Scams on the rise as tax season approaches

The April 15 tax deadline is not far, and the Ventura County Sheriff's Office (VCSO) says con artists are trying to cash in on the date.
"During tax season, phone scammers will attempt to learn Social Security numbers in order to intercept people's returns," said VCSO Detective William Hollowell. Using another person's Social Security number or other personal information, a criminal can file a bogus tax form over the Internet, requesting the return to be sent to a specific address or deposited to a pre-paid debit card.
