Chumash input vital to preserving Ojai, tribal elders say

Since at least the beginning of this year, members of the local Ventureño/Barbareño tribe of Chumash, along with supporting Ojai community members, have been regularly attending Ojai City Council and Planning Commission meetings. They’ve been begging for a “seat at the table,” especially concerning community development and protection of cultural resources.
“I’ve read the (Ojai) general plan in regards to archeological and cultural resources in the area, and it does lack our input as Native American people of this valley,” said Ojai resident Patrick Tumamait during a Jan. 13 discussion of Ojai City Council goals.
