Locals offer differing views on potential vacation rental ordinance

As businesses like Airbnb, Inc., have grown widely in popularity over recent years, communities all over California are grappling with how to balance the needs of the property owner with issues like neighborhood integrity, affordable housing and equitably collecting transient occupancy tax (T.O.T). According to the Los Angeles Times, for example, Malibu requires these types of rentals to register with the city and pay a 12 percent T.O.T. Only 50 of the 400-plus transient rentals listed through various websites have actually done so, however.
