The Ojai Valley Youth Foundation will host its 16th annual celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his message of diversity, equality and peace Monday.

The coming holiday gave longtime Ojai resident Lanny Kaufer the opportunity to reflect on his activism during the Civil Rights movement, specifically a summer spent in rural Virginia working to register black voters as part of King's Summer Community Organization and Political Education (SCOPE) project.

“The SCOPE project, was a voter registration project timed to coincide with the passing of the voting rights act in 1965 … It was like a second Freedom Summer,” said Kaufer.
