Low-cost with high-interest: Project stirs memories of 1992

The Montgomery Oaks Family Apartments, constructed in 1993, is the city’s largest affordable apartment complex, according to Ojai’s 2014-2021 Housing Element.

Just as affordable housing projects generate heated discussions today, so too did Montgomery Oaks when it was proposed in 1992.

“Nothing is easy, obviously. It was fairly contentious at the time, but I think at that time we did the right thing,” said Steve Olsen, who was a councilman when the project was approved.
