Playhouse pleadings: Judge sets May 8 trial date

Ojai Playhouse Theater owner Khaled Al-Awar’s lawsuit against the Golden State Water Company (GSWC) will go to trial May 8 in Ventura County Superior Court.
Attorneys for both sides in the litigation learned of the date during a pretrial conference Feb. 27.
The 100-year-old Playhouse received extensive structural damage resulting from the 2014 rupture of a water main operated by GSWC. The subsequent repair work was underwritten by Golden State, whose initial insurance carrier’s policy reached its maximum in January 2015, at which time GSWC’s secondary insurance carrier took over and all work on the building came to a halt.
For much of 2015, the insurance company, GSWC and Al-Awar conducted a series of negotiations over payments for repairs, culminating in Al-Awar’s decision to file suit. His complaint, filed in November 2015, cited four causes of action — inverse condemnation, nuisance, trespass and negligence — contending GSWC’s responsibility for completing the repairs.
