John Slade, a well-known local actor, musician and former Nordhoff High School educator, died July 7 after sustaining internal injuries during a July 6 hit-and-run car accident on Highway 101 near Ventura's Victoria Avenue exit.
According to officer Kevin Denharder of the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the accident occurred  July 6 at 11:45 p.m. while Slade was returning to Ojai from a theater rehearsal in Thousand Oaks.
Slade was directing a Kingsmen Shakespeare Company production of “Julius Caesar” on the Thousand Oaks campus of California Lutheran University (Cal Lutheran), said Karin Grennan, a Cal Lutheran spokeswoman.
According to Denharder, a black Audi coupe collided with Slade's Toyota Prius the night of July 6. Both drivers lost control of their vehicles following the collision.
The Audi rolled over into a culvert adjacent to the freeway and the driver fled the scene, leaving an injured passenger in the vehicle, said Denharder.
The passenger, an Oxnard man, suffered minor injuries.
