An Ojai woman was killed as the result of a hiking accident Aug. 20 in the Los Padres National Forest.
The woman, 53-year-old Toni Large, was hiking with family members when the accident occurred in Potrero John Canyon, approximately 20 miles north of Ojai, according to Sgt. Steve Jenkins with the Ventura County Sheriff's Office (VCSO),
Jenkins said the party was returning to the trailhead around 5 p.m. when the woman was struck and pinned by a 6-foot by-6-foot boulder that came loose in the creek bed.
VCSO and fire personnel responded, but the woman had been taken by family members to the hospital before help arrived.
A helicopter was requested to medevac the patient, but it was canceled.
The Ventura County Medical Examiner's Office said Large died from injuries suffered when she was pinned by the rock.
Large was pronounced dead at Ojai Valley Community Hospital shortly after 6 p.m.
