In its Aug. 25 season opener, the Nordhoff High School (NHS) football team jumped out to a 16-6 lead over the Hueneme Vikings before the host team exploded for 14 unanswered points to take a 20-16 lead over the Rangers.
Despite relinquishing the lead, the Rangers showed mental toughness down the stretch and came up with defensive stops when they needed them.
Trailing 20-16, the Rangers put together what would be their game-winning drive by converting two fourth-and-long situations. The drive was capped by a 20-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Parker Johnsen to senior Jesse Kuhn.
Clinging to a 23-20 lead, the NHS defense was on the ropes in the final minutes of the game, but seniors Anthony Rodriguez and Ethane Sunder made big plays to help Nordhoff earn its first win of the season, 23-20.
Nordhoff’s first two touchdowns of the night came from junior running back Brayden Rogers, who ran hard all night long.
Kuhn also added a short field goal.
See the Sept. 1 edition of the Ojai Valley News for more information on Nordhoff’s big win and for quotes from head coach Lance Wiggins.
