Mast year means the trees are going nuts

It has been a mast year for acorn production around the Ojai Valley.

Have you noticed a little extra crunch underfoot lately?
The Ojai Valley is experiencing a bumper crop of acorns, known as a “mast year.”
“I've seen mast years before, but I've been in Ojai now 20 years, and I've never seen a mast year like this one,” said U.S. Forest Service (USFS) botanist Lloyd Simpson.
In a mast year, nut-producing trees like oaks can produce five to 10 times more nuts than in an average year.
