Nicole Collier believes women from small towns can do great things.
The 26-year-old science teacher, born and raised in Ojai, has been a park ranger in bush Alaska, studied geology and glaciology in Norway and explored Arctic Canada and Greenland.
Now Collier is hoping to be chosen as one of two North Americans to compete in an arctic sled dog race in April 2018.
“Which should not be shocking,” she said with a laugh.
Collier has entered a contest sponsored by outdoor equipment manufacturer Fjallraven to compete in the 300 km (186 mile) race across the Scandinavian wilderness.
An admitted lover of ice and snow, Collier attended Mira Monte Elementary, Matilija Junior High and Nordhoff High School, and worked at Ojai Community Bank, Kingston's Candy Company and Ojai Rexall.
