Richard and Sheryl McArthur arrived in Ojai in 1977. As they celebrated 40 years in town, they were named Living Treasures by the Rotary Club of Ojai and the Rotary Club of Ojai West.
The McArthurs are particularly fond of working with children. Richard, a founding member of the Rotary Club of Ojai West, initiated the group’s Dictionaries in the Classroom project in 2002, while he served as the club’s president.
Every year, the program provides each Ojai Unified School District (OUSD) third-grader a dictionary.
“It’s a wonderful tool, it’s very often the first book that’s actually theirs, an adult-type book for them to keep and take,” said Richard.
In addition to providing third-graders with dictionaries, Rotarians provide all OUSD third-grade teachers with lesson plans to teach the children how to use their new tomes.
