Hildegard Tallent received word that Help of Ojai needed assistance setting up its fire relief store Dec. 13 via a Facebook post from Sunday Rylander.
“I dropped everything and came here in 10 minutes,” said Tallent as she managed the store Dec. 19. “We had a massive amount of donations that we had to sort through, just big mountains of clothing.”
“I posted a video and the response was amazing,” Rylander said. “They just came.”
Tallent once managed an Arcade store called Kava Gifts and was able to transform the donations into the walk-in fire relief store with the help of her fellow volunteers.
Rylander, a Patagonia employee, and Hattie Vail, who once ran the eponymous downtown store Hattie, also contributed their retail skills, Tallent said.
By Dec. 15, the store (in which all merchandise is free) was ready for visitors.
