Villanova girls start 1-1 in league hoop action

In what Villanova Preparatory School (VPS) girls’ head basketball coach Dan Mercer has called “the most unusual season ever,” the Lady Wildcats have still managed to open their league schedule with a 1-1 record.
Like most winter sports teams, the VPS girls have had to deal with the fallout of the Thomas Fire and the recent mudslides.
On Jan. 11, VPS beat Malibu at home, 50-39, after breaking the game open in the fourth quarter.
Madison Fabbian scored 18 points, and had four assists to go along with four steals. Grace Wells added 16 points and five assists while Faith Cottam recorded seven points. Mackenzie Hicks led all VPS rebounders with nine.
“It is always great for your confidence to win the first league game,” said Mercer.
