Fire-resistant landscape workshop being offered

Ojai Valley residents can learn about sustainable, fire-safe landscaping, at a free workshop hosted by Casitas Municipal Water District (CMWD) Feb. 24.
U.C. Cooperative Extension Natural Resources Advisor Dr. Sabrina Drill will speak at the workshop, “Regrowing from the Ashes.”
“One of the things I'll cover is an overview of fire ecology in Southern California, particular to the Mediterranean climate of our region,” Drill said.
Although some of the focus will be on recovery, Drill said much of her presentation will be pre-fire.
“I'll talk about the recovery we can expect to see in the natural areas,” she said, “and how to prepare a home landscape to be fire-resistant.”
Drill plans to offer advice on sustainable landscaping that can help protect property and neighboring landscaping.
“I'll have tips on how to recreate their home landscaping or work on an existing landscape,” Drill said, “and we'll get into problems with invasive plants that can outcompete native plants.”
