City Council goes nuclear in talks about appointees and weapons

The Ojai City Council spent an hour of its Feb. 13 regular meeting debating candidates for the city's Building Appeals Board (BAB) and declaring the city of Ojai a nuclear-free zone.
Ojai Mayor Johnny Johnston nominated retired Ventura County Fire Department (VCFD) Fire Capt. Wayne Maynard to serve on the BAB. He decided against renominating current BAB Chair William Ulrich to the commission, a move that BAB members Judy Murphy and Dale Hanson spoke against.
Councilmen Paul Blatz and William Weirick also opposed the move.
The ensuing debate included personal accusations against both Maynard and Ulrich.
Ultimately, Johnston was unsuccessful in his effort to bring Maynard to the BAB, with Weirick, Blatz and Councilman Randy Haney voting in opposition.
