Nordhoff High School (NHS) wrestler Nick Stringer advanced to the CIF Southern Section Masters meet at Temecula High School in hopes of qualifying for the CIF state finals.
Unfortunately for the NHS sophomore, he was matched up against the top-seeded wrestler in the 106-pound division.
That wrestler was Victor Atherton, of Arroyo High School, who just happens to be Stringer’s cousin.
“They wrestled once before last year and Nick got pinned. He wrestled a much tougher match this time around and it was 4-2 Atherton going into the last period, but Atherton got an escape and a takedown and near fall with 30 seconds left to make the final score 9-2,” said NHS head coach Paul Clementi.
In his second match of the tournament, Stringer lost a heartbreaker to Jose Hernandez, of Villa Park High School, 4-3.
