Tommy, a 25-year-old draft horse, was found wandering in a field near Briggs Road in Santa Paula during the Thomas Fire. He was brought to the Humane Society of Ventura County (HSVC) Dec. 13, alongside hundreds of animals who were evacuated from their homes due to the December blaze. His owners never came forward to claim him.
Tommy, an Arab/Percheron cross, was emaciated when he came to HSVC. His white coat was covered in mud and ash, said HSVC Director of Community Outreach Greg Cooper.
Anne Scioscia, a Westlake Village resident, spotted a photo of Tommy in a January edition of the Ventura County Star and decided she had to meet him.
“I just needed closure. I needed to visit him,” she said. “I was so afraid to do that, I can't visit shelters – I'll come home with six dogs and five cats.”
She didn't come home with dogs or cats, but she came back for Tommy April 26, after he was cleared for adoption by HSVC's veterinarian.
