Starting June 2, Ventura County will no longer be only the “805.”
According to the California Public Utilities Commission (PUC), a new area code is being added because available telephone prefixes in the 805 area code are just about exhausted.
The overlay of a new 820 area code will change the way local calls are made.
Although the existing area code will remain and current phone numbers will not be changed, callers will have to press “1” plus the three-digit area code for all local calls from landline telephone numbers within the 805 and 820 area codes before entering the seven-digit telephone number.
For cell phone calls, the area code needs to be used for local calls, but pressing “1” is not necessary.
