Developers circle back on spheres’ status, say they will go

The Petrochem spheres, as they appeared in 2017, will not be granted historical status.

Two ammonia-holding spheres on the former Petrochem site near Casitas Springs will not be granted historical landmark status.
Instead, the metal tanks, believed to be coated with asbestos, will be demolished and hauled away.
A representative for the property owner, Moorpark-based Petrochem Development I LLC, asked to withdraw the landmark request May 21.
Both 67-foot-diameter steel spheres are covered with a material presumed to contain asbestos. Insulation on pipes at the base of the spheres also is presumed to be asbestos-containing.
