David Freiberg remembers the first time he heard the name Jefferson Airplane.
Jailed on a marijuana charge in 1965, he was paid a visit by friend and band founder Paul Kantner, who asked him what he thought of the name.
“I said, 'that sounds amazingly different,'” Freiberg recalled.
The San Francisco-based band featured Kantner (guitar and vocals), Grace Slick (vocals), Marty Balin (vocals), Jorma Kaukonen (lead guitar and vocals), Jack Casady (bass) and Spencer Dryden (drums).
In 1974, following the break-up of Jefferson Airplane, Kantner updated the name to Jefferson Starship and added Freiberg on vocals and keyboards.
