Three groups appeal judge’s ruling on oil drilling operation

An appeal filed July 23 challenges a Ventura County Superior Court judge’s April ruling that would allow 19 new oil wells and the continued operation of 17 wells along the Santa Paula Canyon hiking trail.
The court ruled in April to uphold a 3-2 vote by the Ventura County Board of Supervisors, in October 2015, that approved the request by drilling company Carbon California, operator of the existing wells.
The supervisors’ approval relied in large part on a 1978 environmental impact report.
Jeff Kuyper, executive director of the Los Padres ForestWatch (LPFW), explained the appeal. “It’s basically a continuation of the lawsuit filed in 2015,” he said. “What we filed this week was an appeal of the judge’s decision.”
LPFW, Citizens for Responsible Oil and Gas (CFROG) and Center for Biological Diversity (CBD) joined forces to file the appeal.
With the appeal, the groups hope to force a new environmental review and report to take place.
