Experts: East End sinking due to pumping

The East End of Ojai is slowly sinking as groundwater is pumped out to nourish orchards, a team of geologists reported in December at a scientific conference in San Francisco. The area is one of several in Ventura County where the ground is subsiding.
Scott Marshall, a professor of geology at Appalachian State in North Carolina, working to quantify ground movements for the Southern California Research Center in Los Angeles, said that microwave radar data compiled over a five-year period by the Envisat satellite revealed seven areas of sinking land in Ventura County.
